Burt’s Bees Greater Good Foundation is a non-profit organization that sustains charitable, grassroots initiatives, that support human and honeybee health. The organization was established in Wilmington Delaware, 2007. They dedicate their time and resources to providing agriculture for bees along with giving grants to organizations. Since 2007, the Burt’s Bees Greater Good Foundation has issued over $2.4 million in grants through programs spanning research, education, and conservation. In 2015, they donated over $330,000 in proceeds to save the bees to non-profit organizations. Their main goal is preserving the honeybees and doing so by donating and establishing forages by planting wildflowers alongside farmland for the honey bees to pollinate and receive food. Pollinators play a role in the production of over 150 food crops along with pollinating over 80% of all flowering plants in the United States and without them there would be a major decline in these plant populations. Employees that work for Burt’s Bees put in more than 2500 volunteer hours towards saving the bees, along with sponsoring a company wide Burt’s Bees Culture day. By volunteering, employees receive paid-time off in return. Veronica Cortes, Green Team member of two years commented on what she knew about the endangered insects, “We need the bees to keep our plants and crops alive and without plants we would lack so much of our current food supply.” Veronica was unaware that Burt’s Bees did so much for the bees and stated, “I think what they’re doing for the bees is great, we need more people to do something about the honeybees because they are important and necessary for our ecosystem.”
The number of managed honeybee colonies has steadily declined over the past 60 years, from 6 million colonies to just 2.5 million today. The Burt’s Bees Greater Good Foundations believes that the company should focus on natural health and well being, along with minimizing its impacts on the environment. The goal of the company is to be the “greenest personal-care company on the planet”. The Burt’s Bees Greater Good Foundation are trying to protect the pollinators one bee at a time. Anyone can purchase a Burts Bees chapstick from most local grocery stores to support the company. Save the Bees!
